EU Fine Against Google: Fady Ramzy’s Analysis on Digital Advertising
Fady Ramzy shares his insights on the EU fine against Google, its impact on digital advertising, and the wider strategy to regulate Big Tech in Europe.
My Analysis on the EU’s New Fine Against Google and What It Means for the Future of Digital Advertising
On September 6, 2025, I joined Asharq News to discuss the European Commission’s latest multibillion-dollar fine against Google, the fourth major penalty imposed on the company to date. Today, this new EU fine against Google is not a surprise. During the interview, I highlighted the legal, competitive, and political dimensions behind this important development and what it means for the future of the digital advertising ecosystem in Europe.

Why the European Union Imposed This New Fine
In the interview, I explained that the European Commission’s case centers on Google’s self-preferencing practices within its advertising technology stack. The EU found that the company was favoring its own ad-tech services at the expense of publishers, advertisers, and competing platforms. Such behavior, in the Commission’s view, undermines fair competition and restricts the ability of European companies to compete effectively in the digital advertising market.
How the EU Views Market Dominance
I referred to statements from the EU Competition Commissioner, who emphasized that when markets fail, regulators must act to prevent dominant players from abusing their power. True competition, she noted, requires equal opportunity, and that means ensuring a diverse range of advertising platforms not a market dominated by a single company. Today, the scale of Google’s influence makes this intervention necessary in the eyes of the EU.
Part of a Wider European Strategy on Big Tech
This fine is not an isolated event. As I stressed during the interview, it reflects a broader, long-term European approach to regulating Big Tech and limiting the dominance of major U.S. technology companies. Over the past decade, the EU has consistently taken steps, through legislation, fines, and compliance measures, to create a more balanced and competitive digital economy.
Trump’s Reaction and the Political Dimension
I also addressed U.S. President Donald Trump’s reaction, in which he described the fine as “unfair” and hinted at imposing retaliatory tariffs on European products. I explained that while such statements often appear quickly and forcefully, they are not always followed by concrete action. Nonetheless, his comments underscore a renewed period of political and trade tension between the U.S. and Europe regarding technology governance.
Final Thoughts
This interview offered an important opportunity to shed light on the ongoing transformation of the global advertising market. The EU’s actions signal a clear message: dominance without accountability will no longer be tolerated, especially in sectors that shape how information flows across societies. As digital advertising continues to evolve, fair competition, transparency, and multi-platform innovation will remain essential pillars for a healthier digital ecosystem.
